When Kate Bush released her double-album Aerial, she was 47. It’s a deeply sentimental and etherial work. Bush chirps in all cadences and nearly religious pathos about her everyday. If you listen closely, she introduces her son, tells him goodnight, reflects on her washing machine, and mourns for her mother. Kate Bush built herself a nest over the years that were silent around her. She shows us the nest and its surroundings. In the background you hear birds singing over longer passages. Sometimes she is just laughing. She has a big heart and long arms. This could sound a little simple-minded in high doses, but here it doesn’t. The album is looking at you with wide and wise eyes. Finally we reach the airy summit with her singing the 137 decimals of #pi. All this breathes deeply and is woven with light. So even the painter finds comfort when his colours get tragically washed away, because look what they have become. A beautiful sunset.
